Religion

The Betsileo people of Madagascar are very spiritual people. Although missionaries converted many of the people to Catholic and Protestant beliefs, some still practice their pre-Christian Beliefs. Part of those beliefs incorporates deities, souls, and ancestral spirits. They believe in a creator god Zanahary. Like the Christian belief they also believe in a man-like force called hasina

The Betsileo also take care of the dead through re-burial services called famadihana. This elaborate ceremony takes place during the agricultural off-season and is usually a large and elaborate service. It is an occasion where the tribe members enter ancestral tombs, remove the corpses and rewrap them. These events are usually large where many people come and watch. After the ceremony there is usually a large celebration where they slaughter an animal and the meat it cooked and eaten.

The Betsileo people of Madagascar have different beliefs then the one I practice. However, they are actually similar in some aspects. As a Christian, I believe in God and his son that was born in the form of a man. Like the Betsileo, they believe in a god as well and a manlike force. It was very interesting to see that although the religions are very different, they still have similar aspects. In Anthropology, it is important to not only see the differences in cultures, but the similarities as well. I enjoyed learning about the people of Madagascar and the beliefs they practice.

Background Information

The Betsileo are a Malagasy people living in Madagascar. Their name means "The Invincible Ones", which was chosen after a failed invasion by King Ramitraho. Their group makes up about 12.1 of the population in Madagascar and they reside in the central highlands of the country. They speak a language common to all Malagasy people.

The Betsileo were divided into autonomous clans initially; however, they were conquered by the Merina from the north in the early nineteenth century. They are best known in that region for their rice farming, but they are also other farmers among them. Some others have become carpenters or taken up other skills and settled other parts of Madagascar to work as merchants or for the government.

Vision

The iCross-Cultural Citizen Project’s vision is to create an online cross-cultural space for students, professionals, and youth to learn and exchange cross-culturally sensitive information about contemporary indigenous experiences. From that outsider student’s perspective, we will try to theoretically explore possible collaborative solutions to problems that affect the indigenous populations of our planet. Finally, we hope for the future creation of a space where indigenous youth can share their experiences and their realities with us for real mutual collaboration to take place
